Contra Flows

Doh?



The idea of contra flows for cyclists is all over the Internet, and on Bristol's many 'cycling city' websites (and rants/blogs).

Try BristolStreets for suggestions...

So why not?



I reckon that if cars (like P588FAN) can do it, cyclists ought to be allowed too...

Any suggestions???

  1. Clifton end of Oakfield Road: I can't believe that *anyone* heading for Clifton Park cycles down Hanbury Road and back up Pembroke.

    Mind, I cycle on the Clifton Down paths too, so there's probably no hope for me; I should just go and give myself up to the police.

  2. Contra flow is fine if the bike lane is well marked and doesn't disappear.

    I thought this one on St Mark's Road was rather scary the first time i used it.

Last time I was down at St Mark's Road, I saw a cyclist who was using the contraflow narrowly avoid being totalled by a Range Rover (yes, it really was a Range Rover) swinging wide into St Mark's Road from Mivart Street without even looking left as he turned. And that cycle lane seems to disappear all of a sudden, too. Another expedition with camera in hand seems indicated...

  4. I've never had problems on St Mark's Road; maybe I've just been lucky.

  5. +1 to oakfield road, that road is wider than most of montpelier so there are no width issues, only the far end is tricky. But the reason that road is so good is there is a zebra crossing at the far end, ready for [ab]use.

    I don't trust St Marks Road.

  6. St Marks Contraflow helps calm traffic coming the other way if used right. Not that the traffic coming the other way always knows that it's there due to road markings / parking, so might cause confrontation.
